(Algona)--The City of Algona will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, July 24th at 9:30 a.m. for the completion of its Nebraska and Thorington Street reconstruction project.

Construction began in June 2025 and included the full reconstruction of two blocks of Thorington Street, one block of Nebraska Street and the city parking lot where the ribbon cutting will be held. Additional project goals included improving the pedestrian experience, creating a flexible space for public events, enhancing stormwater management, and connecting several of Algona’s cultural destinations, such as the Camp Algona POW Museum, Kossuth County Historical Society, Carnegie Lawn and the Carnegie Centre for the Arts.

The plans also included “green infrastructure,” such as landscaping, trees, permeable pavers, rain gardens, and stormwater bio cell elements. The City of Algona worked with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), to obtain an Urban Water Quality Initiative (WQI) grant to cover a substantial portion of the green infrastructure construction costs.
