Eurasian Watermilfoil Found in West Lake Okoboji Canal

(Okoboji)--The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and partners at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory recently discovered and treated a small, isolated population of Eurasian watermilfoil. The aquatic invasive species was found growing in the canal system south of Miller’s Bay on West Lake Okoboji. Iowa DNR Fisheries Biologist Andrew Carlson

Carlson details how the aquatic invasive species was discovered.

He says the Eurasian watermilfoil was quickly treated by the DNR.

Carlson says the treatment should be successful.

The DNR is asking boaters and other users in these areas to be extra vigilant to help prevent the spread of these invasive aquatic plants elsewhere in West Lake Okoboji or the other lakes in this chain.
