(Fairmont, MN)--The Fairmont City Council has approved a new amendment to section 2 of its City Charter.
City Councilmember-at-Large Britney Kawecki told KEYC-TV the change was meant to update old language and remove the possibility for misunderstandings surrounding the city’s weak mayor-strong-council system which it has had since inception.
Previously the charter laid out the council’s role as the sole legislative power to determine all matters of policy.
Now it will clarify the mayor’s role presiding over the council, without a vote with the exception of a tie, and the council’s role voting on matters of policy and delegating to the city administrator to handle matters of city administration.
The section is just one of five different areas where the Charter Commission wants to revise language to keep the city’s charter up to date.
